Acne Medicine

If you are desperate for an acne solution, there is surely something that will work for you. There are many different types of acne medications that are available over the counter that will combat acne and bring a solution for clear, beautiful skin. Most of them work quite well, though not all will work for everyone, and if acne is severe, it is important to discuss acne medicine with a dermatologist, who can find the right one for you. However, below are some of the most common types of acne medicines available for everyone today.

One of the first, and perhaps best known treatments for mild acne is benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide works two ways. First it helps to rid the skin of current pimples. Once this is no longer a problem, it helps to reduce and prevent breakouts. Benzoyl peroxide does this by removing dead skin cells from the pores to keep them from clogging and causing acne. It also helps to kill bacteria that cause inflammation, redness and heat associated with the breakout of both black and white head pimples.

Another active ingredient found inside of many acne medications is salicylic acid. This ingredient is best suited to treat non-inflamed blemishes. This also helps to correct skin shedding abnormalities, by helping to remove extra skin cells from inside of the pores. In doing so, this helps get rid of pimples while simultaneously preventing them from coming back. Sylicylic acid does come in many different forms. Keep in mind that sylicylic acid can cause skin irritation, so it should be used carefully. It can be bought in lotions or creams include other ingredients, such as alcohol, which helps reduce sebum. Sebum is a oil in the skin that when overproduced, can be a leading cause of acne. Therefore, medicines with alcohol in them do work well. However alcohol may dry out skin, so if using a medicine containing it, a moisturizer may come in handy to keep skin from becoming too dry.

Two active ingredients that work well together in preventing acne are resorcinal and sulfur. Resorcinal help skin by breaking down the blackheads and whiteheads within the pores. Sulfur, must be mixed with other ingredients because the smell of the sulfur alone would not appeal to anyone. It is unknown why sulfur works so well to keep skin clear, however, this product has been found within these medications for fifty years. Neither can work effectively alone, they are needed together to help skin. However, you can also find sulfur with other key active ingredients, such as the sylicylic acid.

For those who do not like the idea of using acids or chemicals in their skin, an alternative is available. Such products will be labeled herbal or natural. However the effectiveness of such treatments are unknown, as most of these natural medications have not been tested.

Whatever method is chosen, you are likely to find one medication that will work well to help treat and prevent breakouts of your skin. There are many to choose from, so choose wisely. It may take a try or too, but it's a step toward cleaner, healthier and much more beautiful skin.
